Village Baptist Church began when God called Richard and Wilma Dix from Michigan to the Fox Valley Villages of Aurora in 1982. There, they organized a Bible study in their home on Willow Court and held the first public service on Easter Sunday 1982.
The church was officially chartered on January 8th 1983 with eleven members. Of the original eleven, Sig and Dar Kliceva remain as members. For the first few years, growth was slow, but the families were faithful and persevered.
During 1985 the church outgrew the Dix's home, and began meeting at Waubonsie Valley High School.
Another significant event in the life of the church was God's provision for the church to purchase 5 acres of
property for $75,000. along Ogden Avenue for a future building site.
In late 1987 God led the church to call Richard and Richelle Howard, recent graduates from Grand Rapids Baptist Seminary, to relocate to Aurora and work with the Dixs.
1988 and 1989 were busy years! VBC needed a new place to meet, and began holding services at La Petite Day Care Center. In the providence of God, the property that had been purchased earlier was sold for $910,000 and the present property on Ogden and Frontenac was purchased. At this time, the Dix family resigned the pastorate at Village, and began a new church in Elgin.
For nine months during 1989 the present building was constructed utilizing the skills and abilities
of the families present, missionary builders and sub-contractors. When we began services in the present
building, the church had grown to about 75 people; in all, we had met at six different locations including
Wheatland Elementary School, the Dix's basement on 103rd St. and First Baptist Church of Plainfield.
The first service in our own building was held on Thanksgiving 1989 with much rejoicing for God's provision.
Since that time the church has prospered spiritually and has grown to fill the building.
We have added to our family of supported missionaries and now have an outreach in Portugal, Australia, Romania, Brazil, and China. We have a sister church in Ukraine that we support financially as well as an outreach to orphans in that country through the Little Lambs ministry. Our home missions include a family with Mission Aviation Fellowship, a church planting family in Chicago, IL, Camp Manitoumi, our local Pregnancy Information Center and the Dixs who are currently Regional Coordinators for North America with EBM. In recent years, we have seen significant involvement of our members in short term missions projects.
In July of 1998, the Church called Ralph Taylor and his wife Aimee as Associate Pastor to minister in Evangelism and Discipleship. The Taylors served faithfully at VBC until March of 2002 when they were called to minister as Sr. pastor of Grace Baptist Church of Lombard.
In August of 2005, VBC called Bob Stevenson as a short-term intern, and in Februrary of 2006, he was officially called to Village as Associate Pastor. He is married to Becky and they work with the young adults and various ministries alongside the Howards.
As we move forward in the coming year, we must keep in mind the purpose of Village Baptist: to provide a place in the Villages where the Great Commission can be carried out, making disciples, teaching them and baptizing them; and where believers can assemble for worship, prayer and fellowship. To this end, we have recently added a family center and increased classroom space for Christian education.
